New signing to Brace Yourself Records, Slate, are a Cardiff-based four-piece with a razor-sharp sound despite being such a new band. ‘Tabernacl’ is a post-punk track that dives into the nuances of the genre. Its funky, propulsive drum pattern is crisp and aggressive, while the thick-textured guitars form a juxtaposing airy, dense accompaniment for Jack Shepard’s atmospheric, almost ethereal melodies. “Whilst the first half of the song is characterised by regret, I relate the second half to confession,” explains Jack. “And with confession comes a relief which I think is embodied in the music.” Keep an eye out for more from Slate this year. -Dan Peeke
